AirPods Max 2 vs Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones

Apple's AirPods Max 2 vs Bose's QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): noise cancelling, comfort, battery, codecs and price compared, with a clear pick — and where Sony's WH-1000XM6 fits.

By The WhichTVShouldIBuy editorsUpdated

These are the two premium noise cancellers iPhone owners cross-shop most. AirPods Max 2 had the strongest noise cancelling in SoundGuys' testing and are the most Apple-native over-ears you can buy. Bose's QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are SoundGuys' close runner-up to the Sony WH-1000XM6 overall, and they're lighter, last longer per charge, and work as well on Android as on iPhone.

This is an editorial comparison built from manufacturer specs and published reviews, not our own testing. Prices are approximate Amazon prices seen October 5, 2026; Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days (October 6–7) may move them. Bose pricing also depends on color: ~$449 in Black, ~$399.99 in White Smoke and ~$369 in Desert Gold. The embedded SimplyPops video compares both with the Sony WH-1000XM6.

Option A

Choose AirPods Max 2 if…

  • You're all-in on iPhone, iPad, and Mac and want Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Live Translation.
  • You want the strongest noise cancelling SoundGuys measured, and 386.2 g doesn't bother you.
  • You want lossless, ultra-low-latency audio over USB-C for gaming or editing; it gets our gaming score of 4.
  • You can buy at a real discount: ~$429 is about $120 under the $549 list price.

Option B

Choose the QC Ultra Headphones if…

  • Comfort on long flights matters: ~264 g versus 386.2 g, and reviewers flag the AirPods Max 2's firm clamp.
  • You want more battery: 30 hours versus 20 with ANC.
  • Your phone is Android, especially a Snapdragon Sound model that can use aptX Adaptive.
  • You'll take Desert Gold at ~$369, which undercuts AirPods Max 2 by about $60.

Our verdict

Editor's pick

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)

Buy the Bose for most people, including most iPhone owners. It's about 120 g lighter, rated for 10 more hours of battery, works fully on Android, and in Desert Gold it costs less, which is why it gets our higher travel (5 vs 4) and value (3 vs 2) fit scores. AirPods Max 2 win if the strongest ANC and Apple-only features matter more to you than weight, battery, and price.

Frequently asked questions

Which has better noise cancelling, AirPods Max 2 or the Bose QC Ultra Headphones?

AirPods Max 2 had the strongest ANC in SoundGuys' noise-cancelling testing. The Bose is still near the top of the category — SoundGuys ranks it a close runner-up overall to Sony's WH-1000XM6 — and its lighter weight and longer battery matter more on many long flights than the last increment of quiet.

Are AirPods Max 2 worth it over the Bose on an iPhone?

Only if you value Apple's extras and the strongest ANC over comfort and battery. On iPhone, both connect over AAC, so the Bose's aptX support doesn't help, but its ~264 g weight and 30-hour battery still do. At ~$429 vs ~$369 for Desert Gold, the Bose is also cheaper.

What about the Sony WH-1000XM6?

It's the one to beat. Wirecutter's top noise-cancelling pick and SoundGuys' best for most people, the WH-1000XM6 is lighter than both (~254 g), rated for 30 hours with ANC, has 12 mics and a 10-band EQ, and was ~$378 on October 5. It's the value pick and the best choice on most Android phones; our Sony vs Bose comparison covers it in detail.

Which is better on Android?

The Bose. AirPods Max 2 lose most of their Apple-only features on Android, while the Bose works fully on any phone and adds aptX Adaptive on Snapdragon Sound phones. The Sony WH-1000XM6, with LDAC, is the other strong Android choice.

Can I use them with airplane seat-back screens?

The Bose comes with a 2.5 mm-to-3.5 mm cable for headphone jacks. Apple's spec sheet lists wired audio for AirPods Max 2 over USB-C, so for a seat-back headphone jack you'd need a compatible cable or adapter.
