The Best Travel Headphones of 2026

For flights and commutes: Sony's WH-1000XM6 over-ears and WF-1000XM6 earbuds, Bose's QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), and the 57-hour Sennheiser Momentum 5.

By The WhichTVShouldIBuy editorsUpdated 6 picks

Travel is where noise cancelling earns its price. Engine drone is exactly the steady, low-pitched noise ANC handles best, and a long flight tests battery life and comfort in ways a commute doesn't. Every pick here scores 4 or 5 on our travel fit score.

These picks and fit scores are an editorial synthesis of published reviews and manufacturer specs, not our own testing. Prices are approximate Amazon prices seen on October 5, 2026, not live quotes; they change often, so check the current price before you buy.

How we chose

This guide is ranked mostly on our travel fit score, which combines ANC strength, battery life, comfort, and portability. Calls broke ties, since work trips mean calls from airport gates and hotel rooms. Every pick scores 4 or 5 for travel; the order reflects how much of that you get for the money and how easy each is to live with on the road.

Wirecutter's noise-cancelling guide (updated July 20, 2026) and SoundGuys' April 2026 roundup set the over-ear order. SoundGuys and MacRumors informed the earbud picks, and Trusted Reviews, WIRED, What Hi-Fi?, and SoundGuys the Momentum 5. Battery figures are manufacturer ratings; real-world results vary with volume and ANC use.

Over-ear or earbuds for flights?

For long-haul flights, over-ear. Every over-ear pick here is rated for 30 hours or more per charge, and the ear cups add passive isolation on top of the electronics. Our earbud picks are rated for 8 hours with ANC before they need the case, which covers most flights but not an overnight flight plus a layover without a top-up.

Earbuds win on space and versatility. If you travel with only a carry-on, mostly take shorter flights and trains, or want one pair for the plane and the hotel gym, take earbuds: the WF-1000XM6, or AirPods Pro 3 on iPhone.

Before you fly

A few spec-sheet details matter more on the road than at home:

  • Seat-back screens: many still use a headphone jack. The WH-1000XM6 has a 3.5 mm input, the Bose includes a 2.5 mm-to-3.5 mm cable, and the Space One has an AUX input. Earbuds need a separate Bluetooth transmitter.
  • Quick charges: 3 minutes gives the WH-1000XM6 3 hours, 5 minutes gives the Space One 4, 10 minutes gives the Momentum 5 7, and 15 minutes gives the Bose about 2.5 to 3.
  • Cases: the WH-1000XM6 folds into a magnetic case, and the AirPods Pro 3 and WF-1000XM6 cases both charge on a Qi pad.
  • Weight: the WH-1000XM6 (~254 g) is the lightest over-ear here; the Momentum 5 is the heaviest at 290 g.

Frequently asked questions

Are over-ear or in-ear headphones better for flying?

Over-ears, for most long flights: our over-ear picks are rated for 30 to 57 hours per charge, versus 8 hours with ANC for our earbud picks. Earbuds are the better choice for light packers and shorter trips. The Sony WF-1000XM6 and AirPods Pro 3 still get a 5 of 5 travel fit score.

Can I use Bluetooth headphones with airplane entertainment?

Often not without a cable, because many seat-back screens still use a headphone jack. The Sony WH-1000XM6 has a 3.5 mm input, the Bose QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) include a 2.5 mm-to-3.5 mm cable, and the Soundcore Space One has an AUX input. For earbuds, you'd need a Bluetooth transmitter that plugs into the jack.

Which travel headphones have the longest battery life?

The Sennheiser Momentum 5, rated for up to 57 hours with ANC, with a user-replaceable battery. The Soundcore Space One is rated for 40 hours with ANC, and the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for 30.

Sony or Bose for travel?

Both get a 5 of 5 travel fit score. The Sony is lighter (~254 g vs ~264 g), cheaper (~$378 vs ~$449 in black), and quicker to top up (3 minutes for 3 hours, versus 15 minutes for about 2.5 to 3). The Bose adds aptX Adaptive and Immersive Audio, and its Desert Gold color was ~$369 on Oct 5.
