Sony Bravia 5: prices, fit, and what the testing says
Sony's midrange mini-LED, and the cheapest TV in our catalog with top marks for both a bright room and movies. It also costs the most to run.
Our take
The short version
The Bravia 5 is for a bright living room where you still care how films look. It's a quantum-dot mini-LED with Sony's processing and Google TV, and it fills the midrange role the Bravia 7 used to. Of the sets we cover, it's the cheapest one that scores top marks for both a bright room and movies. The other two are the Samsung S95H and Sony's Bravia 9 II, at well over $2,000.
You pay for the badge. The TCL QM8L and Hisense U8QG match or beat its bright-room, dark-room, sports, and gaming scores for $200 to $400 less, which is why our value score is middling. It also has only two HDMI 2.1 ports.
Amazon.com had the 65-inch at $1,498 on October 19, up from $1,398 on October 7. At 85 inches, Amazon itself wasn't selling it on October 19.

The scores, explained
Fit by room and use
By room
- Bright room5/5
- Bright mini-LED output handles daylight well. It shares the top bright-room score with the S95H, Bravia 9 II, and the bright TCL and Hisense sets.
- Mixed light4.5/5
- Daylight is easy and night is good, with some blooming on dark scenes. That puts the blend in the second tier, just under the S95H.
- Dark room4/5
- Local dimming keeps blacks deep, but halos can show on tough dark scenes, a point short of the OLEDs.
By use
- Movies & TV5/5
- This is the score that sets it apart from TCL and Hisense: Sony's upscaling and motion lift everyday streaming, not just 4K HDR.
- Sports5/5
- A top score, from Sony's motion processing, cleaner upscaling of broadcast feeds, and enough brightness for afternoon games.
- Gaming4/5
- Good, not class-leading. Two HDMI 2.1 ports, one shared with eARC, is the limit for multi-console setups.
- A bit of everything4.67/5
- Ties for the top all-round reading in the catalog, thanks to strong films and sports.

Of the helper's 144 possible answers, the Sony Bravia 5 makes the shortlist in 12 and leads it in 3. With no limit, the helper's top pick for a bright room and movies is the Bravia 5, ahead of costlier sets with the same scores. Under $1,800 it slips out of the top three: at about $1,500 it leaves little budget headroom, and the cheaper QM8L, QM7L, and U8QG collect that bonus.
