TCL QM7L: prices, fit, and what the testing says

The cheapest TV in our catalog and the one the helper reaches for first on a budget. Its prices barely moved across our checks.

By The WhichTVShouldIBuy editorsUpdated 2026 model65-inch: 65QM7L

Our take

The short version

The QM7L is how you get a big, bright screen for under $1,000. It's a quantum-dot mini-LED from 55 to 98 inches, bright enough to overcome glare in most well-lit rooms, per RTINGS, with Google TV and VRR gaming. The 65-inch was $898 at Amazon.com on October 19.

It's also stable. Across October 7, 12, and 19 the 65-inch moved by a cent, and the 55-, 75-, and 85-inch didn't move at all. For a TV this cheap, that's a sign the price you see is its regular one, not a short sale.

The trade-offs are the usual ones for the price. RTINGS says the image degrades rapidly from the sides, HDR accuracy is poor, and only two of its HDMI ports are 2.1.

The scores, explained

Fit by room and use

By room

Bright room5/5Tied 1st of 15 (7 TVs)
Bright enough for most sunny rooms, per RTINGS, which ties it for the top score here at the lowest price in the catalog.
Mixed light4/5Tied 9th of 15 (4 TVs) · average of bright and dark
Daylight is no problem. Evenings are where its weaker dimming shows, so the blend drops to the middle of the pack.
Dark room3/5Tied 13th of 15 (3 TVs)
RTINGS praises its deep, uniform blacks, but it has fewer dimming zones than the QM8L, and haloing around bright objects keeps it well short of an OLED.

By use

Movies & TV3/5Tied 13th of 15 (3 TVs)
Bright and colorful, but RTINGS calls its HDR accuracy poor, and blooming shows in dark films. This is its weakest use.
Sports4/5Tied 6th of 15 (7 TVs)
Bright for day games, though motion and processing trail Sony's and the viewing angle is narrow for a wide sofa.
Gaming4/5Tied 7th of 15 (9 TVs)
Two HDMI 2.1 ports with 4K at 144Hz and VRR. Good for one console; a second needs the other port.
A bit of everything3.67/5Tied 13th of 15 (3 TVs) · average of movies, sports, and gaming
A bright-room bargain more than an all-rounder. Movies pull the blend down.

What Find my TV picks it for

Of the helper's 144 possible answers, the TCL QM7L makes the shortlist in 87 and leads it in 48. Under $1,000, the QM7L and the Roku are the only TVs that fit, and the QM7L is the top pick for every bright and mixed-room answer there. It keeps the top spot for bright rooms under $1,200, and only fades at higher budgets, where better-scoring sets come into reach.

Electricity

Cost to run

We don't have a sourced figure for this TV. We found no DOE filing and no EnergyGuide label for the QM7L. TCL's spec page lists one power figure per size without saying whether it's typical or maximum, and says it isn't ENERGY STAR certified, so we don't build a running cost on it.

Who should skip it

  • Skip it if

Lamps or windows face the screen

Instead: Hisense U7SG. Its matte screen handles reflections much better, per RTINGS. Only on sale, though: $1,497.99 to the QM7L's $898 on October 19.

  • Skip it if

    You watch films at night

Instead: Roku Pro Series OLED. OLED blacks for about $100 more at 65 inches on October 19.

  • Skip it if

You want better blacks and still want TCL

Instead: TCL QM8L. Deeper blacks with less haloing, and brighter, per RTINGS, for $400 more at 65 inches on October 19.

Sound

Soundbars that pair with it

At 65 inches, the size our prices use, the picture is 56.7 inches wide, so every soundbar we cover fits underneath. At 55 inches, the smallest TCL QM7L size, 12 of them do. None of the bars we cover names a feature for TCL sets from 2026, so any bar over HDMI eARC is the same deal.
